NOTCH STRENGTH REDUCTION OF FIBRE METAL LAMINATE (FML)

INTRODUCTION

A Fiber Metal Laminate (FML) is one of a class of metallic materials consisting of a laminate of several thin metal layers bonded with layers of composite material. This material behave much as a simple metal structure, but with considerable specific advantages regarding properties such as metal fatigue, impact, corrosion resistance, fire resistance, weight-savings and specialized strength properties.

FML are a new type of composite. Thin sheets of aluminum are alternated with thin sheets of traditional composite. It becomes a good substitute for metal structures, especially in aerospace and aircraft applications. This is because of its good mechanical properties such as excellent fatigue and impact resistance as well as damage tolerance, without sacrificing low weight.

In this research, short Kenaf fiber was use as reinforcement filler and polypropylene (PP) as a matrix and then laminated with aluminum thin sheet. This research will investigate the nocth strength of the specimen by varying the hole diameter.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE

The objectives of research are:

i. To determine the notch strength reduction in tension of FML based on Kenaf fiber. This is very important because in real application it is necessary to drill holes into laminates to facilitate bolting or riveting for joining process.

ii. To compare the notch strength reduction with the post impact tensile strength.

Helang hijau: Secara ringkas nye.. aku nk test properties material ni... kalo korang nk tau, fibre-metal laminate adalah main structural material dalam upper fuselage Airbus A380. buat kapal terbanmg ni.. so aku cume tukar komposit kat tgh tu gune kenaf. .aku akan guna fiber dr pokok kenaf, gaul dgn PP plastic dalam machine bernama mixer bersuhu 190 degree celcius... bile sejuk mende ni akan jd mcm doh kuih.. tapi sgt keras kerana plastik keras bile sejuk... kemudian aku akan hancurkan doh yg keras ni tuk jd bentuk pallet.. then, masukkan dalam mold yg telah terpilih.. pastu guna teknik hot press dgn pressure 500psi dan suhu 190 degree celsius tuk upper and lower heater.... bile dah sejuk, kuarkan dr mold.. dapat la bentuk petak 11cm x 15cm..( macam buat kuih.. siyes xtipu).. then potong la ikot dimension yg sesuai dan follow standard.. pastu potong aluminuin sheet, tampla gune araldite@ gam kat specimen td..pastu boleh test... tapi byk keje lg ni.. aku blom potong2 lagi.. hahaha.. riso plak xsempat siap.. xpe... berusaha2.. masih ade mase lg.... hehehe.. gamabr2 dibawah adalah gambar2 semasa proses dijalankan.
